Painting by Tatiana McWethy.
At first glance, it seemed only a Still Life. The eye met a violin and a bow hanging on the wall. Shadows fell with such precision, so exact in their deceit, that several visitors had tried to pluck the instrument from its frame.
And yet - there was something else.
People who entered the room often fell silent, inexplicably so. Their chatter would soften, then vanish entirely. More than one claimed to hear a single note, low and clear, hovering in the room like a question unanswered.
The painting, they said, was not quiet, it contained quiet. It held silence the way a violin holds sound.
It was, perhaps, about the moment after creation, when sound dies and memory begins. The violin, imprisoned and free, hang as a symbol of music, thy symbol of silence that gives music its soul.
