Niki Kanagini (1933–2008) was a prominent Greek artist known for her vibrant expressionistic style and social critique. She studied at the École Cantonale de Dessin et d’Art Appliqué in Lausanne (1952-1954), the Athens School of Fine Arts (1954-1958) under notable artists Yannis Moralis and Yannis Kefallinos, and at the London Central School of Arts and Design (1958-1961).
Her teaching career included positions at the Vacalo School (1963-1967), the Technology Applications Centre (1970-1971), and a role as a scientific advisor at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1984-1986). Niki's first solo exhibition was held in Rome in 1962, and her work continued to gain recognition in solo and group exhibitions across Greece and internationally, including at the Alexandria Biennale in 1980 and the Europalia festival in Brussels in 1982.
Kanagini's art, marked by expressive use of color, spanned various mediums, from painting and tapestry to engraving and spatial constructions. Her work often addressed themes of environmental destruction, gender roles, and the status of women, using traditional techniques to deliver a strong social message. Alongside her artistic practice, she also contributed articles and essays to newspapers, magazines, and exhibition catalogues, adding a critical voice to the cultural discourse of her time.
